Fraternity and Sorority Recruitment
Chapters will be out with their booths on Ring Road during the first two weeks of each quarter. They will have members at the booths promoting their recruitment events and answering questions about their chapter. Visiting a chapter's booth is a great way to meet some of the members of their chapter.
Almost every fraternity or sorority has a chapter website. Visit these websites along with their national website to learn more information.
Fraternities/Sororities
Fraternities and sororities hold events that are attended by many of the members of the chapter. Attending recruitment events allows for the opportunity to meet a large portion of the chapter membership. This is a great opportunity to meet members that share the same major, hobbies, and interests. The best way to learn more about the chapter is to meet the members.
Chapters use interest lists to invite potential new members to upcoming events including uci athletic and intramural games, and the opportunity to hang out with members outside of the school day. Joining a fraternity or sorority is a lifetime commitment and it is important to ask questions. Ask about the expectations of members, how much dues cost, what the chapter does for fun, what types of philanthropic work they do, what members get out of being a member, and what is the best thing about being a member of their chapter.
During the Winter and Spring quarters select chapters from the Panhellenic Association will hold continuous open bidding (c.o.b.) events to recruit new members. Not all chapters participate. Contact chapters directly if you want to find out if they will be recruiting new members during the Winter and Spring quarters.
During the fall the Interfraternity Council (IFC) fraternities recruit at the same time. During the Winter quarter, most IFC fraternities will be holding recruitment events, and during the Spring quarter about half will be recruiting. Most of the IFC fraternities will be in the same area on ring road so that interested students will be able to easily visit all 13 fraternities. The IFC executive board usually holds an informational session for interested students to learn more about the benefits of Greek Life and how to navigate the recruitment process.
Interested students should contact the members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council fraternities and sororities on campus for further information about the membership process known as intake. During the school year chapters will usually hold an informational meeting for interested members to provide them information about the fraternity/sorority and the intake process. Most NPHC fraternities and sororities require that a student be at least sophomore standing to join.
UC Irvine has one of the largest multicultural fraternity and sorority communities in higher education. It is comprised of Latino/Latina, Armenian, Asian, and multicultural fraternities and sororites. Some chapters are represented nationwide, others have chapters only in California, and some chapters are unique just to UC Irvine.
All recruitment events are to be free of alcohol. Fraternities and sororities are prohibited from using alcohol at recruitment events and to recruit new members.
The names of the chapters listed on the UC Irvine Greek Life website are the only fraternities and sororities recognized at UC Irvine. There are honor societies and other professional organizations that use greek letters, but they are not recognized as a fraternity or sorority, instead they are recognized as a greek letter organization. Be aware of any group that says they are a fraternity or sorority but is not listed on the Greek Life website or is registered with the Dean of Students Office. Unrecognized groups are also considered underground groups due to the fact that their activities are done in secret.
