Mission Statement

Greek Life at UC Irvine works with students to create an inclusive environment that challenges members to develop into leaders who uphold the values, oaths, and commitments of their collegiate fraternal organization at UC Irvine. Greek Life values on going relationships with alumni, volunteers, campus administrators, and the surrounding community in order to create meaningful and purposeful undergraduate experiences that fosters a commitment to service and lifetime membership.

About Greek Life

Over 2,300 students and 43 chapters make up the fraternity and sorority community at UC Irvine. The Greek community consists of 23 sororities and 20 fraternities that represent a wide range of ethnicities and cultures. Since 1973 the Greek community has grown expedentially and has become a vibrant part of the UCI campus community. Today you can find fraternity and sorority members in leadership positions throughout the entire campus.

Common Greek Terms

Greek: A member of a Greek-lettered Fraternity or Sorority.

Chapter: A term used to describe an individual Fraternity or Sorority.

Rushee: A non-Greek member who is visiting a Fraternity/Sorority as a guest with the possible intentions of joining.

Fraternity: A Greek-lettered fellowship of men fostering the common ideals of brotherhood.

Sorority: A Greek-lettered fellowship of women fostering the common ideals of sisterhood.

Brother: A term used by members of a Fraternity when referring to one another.

Sister: A term used by members of a Sorority when referring to one another.

Rush/Recruitment: A time when Fraternities and Sororities sponsor activities seeking rushees and when rushees get a chance to visit and meet with different chapters.

Dry Rush: The prohibition of alcohol at any chapter event where rushees are or may potentially be present.

Bid: An invitation to become a member of a Fraternity/Sorority.

Continuous Open Bidding (COB): A method in which sororities seek and give bids to potential new members throughout the year.

New Member: A person who has accepted a bid from a Fraternity/Sorority.

Ritual: Secret and inspirational ceremonies that are used to inspire and educate the members of a Fraternity/Sorority about the importance of the fraternal organization and the values it instills in its members.

Initiation: A traditional and secret ritual that brings an individual into full membership with a Fraternity/Sorority.

Alumnus: An initiated member of a Fraternity/Sorority who has graduated from the University.

Chapter Advisor: An alumnus of a Fraternity/Sorority who guides and provides advice for the chapter in its endeavors.
